A tall can with three claw marks torn down the front. It arrived in 2002 at twice the size of a Red Bull for about the same money, and it has not been quiet since.
In 1935 Hubert Hansen and his three sons began selling fresh juice to film studios and shops around Southern California. The business kept the family name and went bankrupt in 1988.
Four years later a group led by Rodney Sacks and Hilton Schlosberg bought what was left for 14.6 million dollars. It went on selling natural sodas and juice, and in April 2002 it put a new drink beside them: Monster Energy, 16 ounces in a black can.
Ten years on, energy drinks were the largest part of what the company earned. In January 2012 Hansen Natural took the name of its own product and became Monster Beverage.
Those are the numbers on the original green one, as it is sold in the United States. The caffeine works out to about 10 mg an ounce. The sugar is the bigger number: the label counts 54 grams as 108% of a day's added sugar, in one can.
The rest is the energy blend printed on the side: taurine, ginseng, L-carnitine, guarana and B vitamins.

Sponsorship is at the centre of how Monster gets seen. The money goes to people who do loud things in front of crowds, and the claw goes on whatever they ride.

Three ragged strokes that read as the letter M and as a claw mark at once. McLean Design, a branding studio in California, drew it for the launch as the claws of a monster ripping through the can.
It has to work at any size and any speed. It goes on a helmet, on the side of a monster truck, on a wet cover in the pit lane.

Only Red Bull sells more energy drinks in the United States. Coca-Cola paid 2.15 billion dollars for that stake. In February 2024 CNBC counted back thirty years and found no stock in the S&P 500 that had done better: about 200,000%.

More than 300 flavours
The one black can has become a range sold around the world. The white one at the top of this page is Zero Ultra, the sugar-free citrus one that people call White Monster.
These are Health Canada's numbers. For someone who weighs 60 kg and is not yet 18, the guideline comes to 150 mg a day, and one can is 160. An adult reaches the limit at two and a half.
